TORONTO (AP) - New York Yankees infielder Dustin Ackley will have season-ending surgery this week for a torn labrum in his right shoulder, manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday.

Ackley, who is batting .148 with no homers and four RBIs, was injured as he dove back into first base on a pickoff play during Sunday’s win at Tampa Bay.

Girardi said Ackley should be ready to return in time for spring training in 2017.

Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez is not in New York’s starting lineup for the second straight game. Girardi said Rodriguez was held out because he’s 0 for 14 in his career against Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ.

Rodriguez is batting .170 with six homers and 14 RBIs in 24 games.

Girardi said he does not intend to keep A-Rod out for long, but acknowledged that “obviously, production is important to stay in the lineup.”
