DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) - A homeless shelter is set to open in Devils Lake, after months of planning and development.

The Devils Lake Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1NiBndS ) that the Lake Region Community Shelter opens Friday. An open house is planned Thursday evening.

Organizer Karen Nick says she started the shelter effort when she began to notice signs of homelessness in Devils Lake.

The plan is to create a referral-based service utilizing the aid of several organizations in the city, including a human service center, a church-based charity and the police department. The shelter itself is inside an existing food pantry.
