HOUSTON (AP) - A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for aggravated assault in the 2014 death of his prom date at a Houston hotel following the dance.

Harris County jurors delivered the sentence of Eddie M. Herrera on Wednesday, hours after convicting him of aggravated assault in the 2014 death of 17-year-old Jacqueline Gomez. Herrera could have gotten a life sentence.

Gomez attended MacArthur High School in the suburban Aldine (AHL’-deen) school district. The couple shared a room at the same hotel where the prom was held.

According to police, Herrera said he and Garza drank alcohol, and prosecutors say they took prescription painkillers before Herrera choked Gomez during sex.

Herrera’s mother, Melissa Ann Martinez, awaits trial on charges of providing drugs and alcohol to the underage couple.
