JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Interim state education commissioner Susan McCauley is among the finalists for the commissioner’s post.

The other finalists, announced by the state board of education Wednesday, are Michael Johnson, Stewart McDonald and Robert Boyle.

Johnson is superintendent of the Copper River School District. McDonald is superintendent of the Kodiak Island Borough School District. Boyle is superintendent of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District.

The position became open earlier this year when Commissioner Mike Hanley stepped down.

The education department, in a release, says the board plans to interview the finalists June 15. Any appointment is subject to the governor’s approval.

In the release, board chairman James Fields said the finalists have extensive school leadership experience. He says the next commissioner must be able to lead a transformation of Alaska’s education system.
