PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A Portsmouth woman will spend 20 years in prison after admitting to smothering her 6-week-old son to death.

Media outlets report 38-year-old Keisha Holmes pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder in the death of Johnathan Isaiah Omovbo. A judge sentenced her to 30 years in prison with 10 years suspended.

Court documents show Holmes placed her son into a stroller in August 2013 and walked to Holy Trinity Baptist Church. There, prosecutors say, Holmes then smothered the infant with a pillow on a back porch.

An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was consistent with smothering.

Public defender Brenda Spry said that at the time of the killing, Holmes was delusional, believing son was born into a “sinful relationship” and that death was the only way to save him.
