TALLASSEE, Ala. (AP) - Fire has destroyed a vacant mill that once produced items for the Confederate Army in the east Alabama town of Tallassee.

The blaze broke out late Wednesday at the old Mount Vernon mill complex, located beside the Tallapoosa River. Fire Chief Travis Jones tells WTVM-TV (https://bit.ly/1rX7VRa ) several nearby homes had to be evacuated because of the size of the fire, but no injuries were reported.

Now investigators will try to determine the cause of the fire.

The mill site dates back to the 1840s in Tallassee. It produced both cloth and guns for the Confederacy during the Civil War.

The Maryland-based Mount Vernon Mills Inc. acquired the plant in 1900, and the last mill closed in 2005. The brick building was being torn down when it caught fire.
