NEW YORK (AP) - The NYPD says an officer shot and killed a larger dog that was mauling a smaller one.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening in Manhattan’s Inwood section.

When the officer arrived, someone was trying to separate the dogs with an umbrella. Police say the larger dog then turned on that person.

The officer fired four times, killing the attacking dog. The smaller dog died of its wounds.

Police said the larger dog was a pit bull. They did not know the breed of the smaller dog.
