DOVER, Del. (AP) - A state panel has approved $7.5 million in taxpayer funding for a data center and power plant project in Middletown.

The Infrastructure Investment Committee approved funding for project developer Cirrus Delaware LLC on Wednesday.

The committee made clear that the money would be available only as reimbursement for approved expenditures. It also conditioned the funding on approval of a state air quality permit within 12 months and submission of project financing details within one year of final permit approval.

Cirrus is proposing a $350 million facility consisting of a data center and adjacent gas-fired power plant, which would help provide electricity to the site, especially in times of peak demand, but also could send power to the local grid.

Residents have expressed concerns about air emissions and lower property values.
