NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a 24-year-old man has died after hitting his head while surfing on the outside of a subway car in New York.

Police say James Rubio, of Queens, was found unconscious and lying between two subway cars on a Queens-bound F train around 2:30 a.m. Friday when the train reached the Jay Street-MetroTech station in Brooklyn.

They said Rubio died at a local hospital.

A representative for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the city’s subway system, told the New York Daily News (https://nydn.us/1VMobke ) that the man had been riding on the outside of the train, which is illegal.
