BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - A Cape Cod police officer has been arrested on charges he assaulted his wife.

Kevin Conboy pleaded not guilty Thursday in Barnstable to a charge of domestic assault and battery. He was released on his own recognizance.

Authorities say the 33-year-old Dennis police officer became angry during an argument over money at his West Yarmouth home on Wednesday. The victim alleges that he hit her in the throat. She was not seriously hurt.

Court documents say police removed a shotgun from his home for safekeeping. The victim has taken out a restraining order against him.

Conboy’s lawyer didn’t comment on the charge. Lt. John Brady says Conboy is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the department.

He’s due back in court on May 27.
