SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police say they’ve arrested a man in a hammer attack that killed a 69-year-old Tooele woman nearly five years ago.

Authorities said Friday that 23-year-old Rogelio Diaz, Jr. hit victim Evelynne Derricott 14 times during a burglary at her house.

Officers found a man’s DNA evidence on the hammer and used a crime database to make a family connection to Diaz. That made him a prime suspect, but investigators still didn’t have anything directly linking Diaz to the crime.

Tooele police chief Ron Kirby says they followed him until they could grab a pair of his work gloves and a Rockstar energy drink. Authorities say they matched that DNA to the evidence on the hammer and arrested him.

No attorney was immediately listed for Diaz in court records.
