MILWAUKEE (AP) - Police say a 9-year-old girl inside a Milwaukee home was critically injured when she was struck by bullets from gunfire outside.

Police Chief Ed Flynn says the incident happened Thursday night around 8:20. He says two groups armed with rifles and pistols were engaged in a “shootout” when several bullets penetrated the home, striking the girl.

Flynn says she is in critical condition at a hospital.

He says more than 40 shell casings were recovered from the scene.

No further details were immediately available.
