EAST ROCKAWAY, N.Y. (AP) - Police have rescued a kayaker whose boat capsized in a creek off the south shore of Long Island.

Nassau County police said they received a 911 call around 7:15 p.m. Friday reporting a sinking kayak in Swift Creek in East Rockaway.

They said a good Samaritan who had a boat in a nearby marina shuttled the officers to the victim, who was about a quarter-mile from the shore.

The officers were able to bring the 27-year-old kayaker onto the boat and began treating him for hypothermia.

They brought him back to a police facility, where he was checked by emergency medical technicians. The man refused further medical treatment.
