CORONA, Calif. (AP) - An attempted murder suspect who led authorities on a wild chase has been captured after being forced from his disabled car on a Southern California freeway.

SWAT officers using a smoke grenade and a dog grabbed him around 10 p.m. Thursday on State Route 91 in the Corona area after an hours-long standoff that jammed traffic for miles.

The chase began around 6:30 p.m. in Compton.

The Mercedes sideswiped cars as it wove through traffic, blew tires on a spike strip, had a wheel seize up and slammed and scraped along a freeway guardrail on sparking rims.

The smoking car finally stopped and was penned in by SWAT trucks.

Sheriff’s officials say the car was used in an attempted drive-by shooting Monday in the Florence area. However, the gun jammed.
