DETROIT (AP) - A running race takes place in Detroit ahead of an effort to plant 3,000 new trees.

Hantz Woodlands and the Wayne County Farm Bureau are holding Saturday’s Timber Trot 5K, offering the chance to run or walk while raising money to support Detroit education and beautification projects. Following the race, tree planting takes place.

Event details and registration information is posted online.

Hantz Woodlands purchased nearly 180 acres for just over $500,000 in 2013. The company, an outgrowth of Hantz Farms, has been working to plant trees after clearing the collection of abandoned lots and removing debris, overgrowth, trash and vacant homes.

Work has helped improve parts of Detroit’s east side. Thousands of trees have been planted as part of the effort with help from volunteers.
