MACOMB, Ill. (AP) - The Western Illinois University Women’s Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary while planning for the retirement of its director.

Janine Cavicchia plans to retire June 1. Women’s Studies Professor Lori Baker-Sperry has been selected as interim director until a permanent replacement can be found.

The Women’s Center opened in the fall of 1986 to provide resources and support on issues including sexual harassment, domestic violence, sexual assault and pay equity.

The center predated by almost a decade the addition of women’s studies to Western Illinois University’s academic offerings. Over the years, the Women’s Center Resource Library Collection has also grown from 300 books to more than 3,000.

The center recently devoted a weekend of events to mark the 30th anniversary. Two of four previous directors attended.
