YORK, S.C. (AP) - An inmate at the York County jail has been arrested and accused of attacking a guard.

The Herald of Rock Hill reported (https://bit.ly/1Wco4hP) Thursday that 55-year-old Ira Dewitt Hayes of York has been charged with third-degree assault and battery.

Hayes was being held on several charges of assault, malicious injury to property and threatening a public official.

A sheriff’s report says Hayes had become upset, yelling and threatening to fight an officer as he was being escorted back to his cell. The report says the officer grabbed Hayes’ shoulder and he charged at her and grabbed her hands.

Deputies say Hayes hit the officer in the mouth with his handcuffs and bit her arm.

She was taken to a medical facility for a tetanus shot. She did not need stitches.
