MANCHESTER, England (AP) - Belgium captain Vincent Kompany says he has been ruled out of the European Championship.

The 30-year-old defender was forced off with a thigh injury in Manchester City’s loss at Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.

It was the latest frustrating muscle injury for Kompany, who missed large parts of City’s stuttering season with calf problems.

In a Facebook post from his hospital bed, Kompany wrote Saturday: “I’ll miss the Euros. To me that’s very sad news.”

Kompany added: “I could be standing here, feeling sorry for myself. I could fear for my career, as others may do. I could give up. That is not me. I decide on my future.

In the next Euros, which start next month, Belgium faces Italy, Ireland and Sweden in Group E.
