CLINTON, Miss. (AP) - Lora Rance Evans, a mother of two children in the Greenwood school district, has been named the 2016 Mississippi Parent of the Year.

The state Department of Education made the announcement Thursday. The award recipient is chosen by a committee of educators.

Evans is president of the Parent Teacher Student Organization at Greenwood Middle School.

Evans was nominated by the school district and was then named the finalist for the 2nd Congressional District. She has served as a school board member. She also has coordinated ACT test workshops and financial aid workshops. She’s also a founding member of the Greenwood chapter of Parents for Public Schools, the Chamber Education Committee and Young Emerging Leaders of Leflore.
