JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Millsaps College is honoring a longtime Methodist minister and a Clarion-Ledger reporter at its spring commencement.

The college on Saturday was awarding degrees to 172 undergraduates and 32 graduate students during an outdoor ceremony on Millsaps’ Jackson campus.

Honorary degree recipients are the Rev. David McIntosh and Jerry W. Mitchell.

McIntosh served as a minister in eight Mississippi churches, including at Christ United Methodist Church, the state’s largest, from 1972 to 1983. There, McIntosh organized the church’s response to Jackson’s 1979 Easter Flood. After retiring in 1990, McIntosh served 20 years as Christ United’s minister of hospital care.

Mitchell won George Polk Awards in 2006 and 2008 and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2006, all for stories about people who killed civil rights leaders.
