PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state is offering free freshwater fishing for two days to highlight Rhode Island’s fishing areas.

The Department of Environmental Management says residents are invited to fish for any species in the state’s freshwaters without a fishing license or trout conservation stamp on Saturday and Sunday.

The event doesn’t extend to saltwater fishing.

Area ponds were stocked with more than 6,000 rainbow trout for the event.

DEM Director Janet Coit says it’s the perfect time to enjoy the state’s spectacular freshwater fishing.

Anglers who catch a golden trout are encouraged to take a picture of their catch and post it to the DEM Facebook page for a free golden trout pin.
