MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Thousands of Vermonters are picking up trash along roadsides and other landscapes for the state’s annual Green Up Day.

The event takes place Saturday around the state.

Green Up Day was started in 1970 by then-Gov. Deane Davis. The first year resulted in 20,000 cubic yards of trash removed from the interstate and at least 20,000 cubic yards removed from town roads.

The event happens each year on the first Saturday in May.

More information about Green Up Day and contact information for town coordinators can be found online at https://www.greenupvermont.org .
