GLEN BURNIE, Md. (AP) - A Maryland man has been charged with killing his girlfriend and wounding a woman who tried to come to her aid.

Anne Arundel County police say 42-year-old Michael Carroll Wilson is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and several other counts.

According to police, 46-year-old Charlotta Lynn Barkley died in a hospital early Sunday morning after being attacked with a sharp weapon. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The woman who tried to stop the attack was released after being treated for injuries to her hands.

Police say Wilson was arrested after an hours-long search involving ground, air and K-9 units. They say Wilson and Barkley had an on-again, off-again relationship spanning several years.

It was unclear whether Wilson has an attorney.
