DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The director of the Ohio EPA says the agency is working to ensure that a southwest Ohio mobile home park plagued by water system breakdowns has safe drinking water.

The state’s Environmental Protection Agency is assessing and repairing the Pineview Estates system. A contractor was expected to be at the Miami Township site Friday to analyze the problem, The Dayton Daily News reported (https://bit.ly/1WbpXvR).

“Unfortunately, over the past several months, we’ve had to work through our enforcement and regulatory process,” EPA Director Craig Butler said Thursday.

The agency said that water service was restored at Pineview on Farmersville-West Carrollton Road, but residents remain on a boil advisory.

Pineview’s water system has been breaking down since April, according to court records. It’s been operating on a backup well.

Ohio EPA spokeswoman Dina Pierce said that the contractor will be looking at the wells, including the well pumps and electrical systems.

The agency has been overseeing repairs after a judge granted a temporary restraining order that gave the agency access and barred interference from the mobile home park’s owner.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office sought the order because of failed attempts to contact the owner, Timothy Dearwester, to fix the system that supports more than 270 residents. The state EPA has handed down multiple violations, many in the past 18 months.

The agency has said that Dearwester’s failure to fix the system and pay $12,000 in fines is what resulted in the attorney general’s involvement. The office this week filed contempt of court charges seeking a prison term for Dearwester of 30 days for each of the violations.

Messages seeking comment were left by The Associated Press on Friday for Dearwester.

Pineview residents said they’ve been experiencing intermittent outages since the state was granted access to repair the system.
