HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - Hampton residents will get a chance to weigh in on whether to rename two school campuses named after Confederate figures.

The Daily Press reports (https://bit.ly/1T3aZnz ) that the Peninsula Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is pushing for the school division to rename the Davis Middle School and Campus at Lee.

The schools are named after the prominent Confederate figures Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee.

School Board Chairwoman Martha Mugler said the board wants to make a decision that’s based on “the true will” of the community.

A public hearing on the issue will be held on May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Ruppert Sargent Building. Another hearing will be held June 1 at 6 p.m. at Jones Magnet Middle School.
