KENLY, N.C. (AP) - A volunteer firefighter in Johnston County has died after responding to a vehicle crash in Kenly.

Media outlets report that 45-year-old John Morris Davis Jr., a Kenly firefighter, died Saturday of a heart attack. He was among fire crews who responded to a crash in South Kenly.

Kenly Assistant Fire Chief Tim Little says an SUV had hit a light pole, pinning the driver inside the vehicle. Davis began experiencing chest pains while at the scene.

He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Little says Davis joined the department in 2003, moved away for a while, and recently came back as a volunteer firefighter.
