JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A 6-year-old boy has drowned after falling into a retention pond in Jacksonville.

Local news outlets report that the boy fell into the water after he and his brother were playing near the edge of the pond Sunday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says that the boy was underwater for about 8 minutes. Crews with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department found him underwater and brought him to shore.

He was transported to a hospital, but did not survive.

Officials are not sure why the two boys were playing near the pond.
