HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - A 30-year-old man is scheduled for retrial in the death of a former Southern Mississippi women’s basketball player who was shot in the back in December 2011.

Jairus Collins was convicted in 2013 of murdering 27-year-old Ebony Jenkins, and was sentenced to life in prison.

But the state Supreme Court overturned his conviction last summer, ruling that the trial judge should have thrown out statements Collins made to police after saying he wanted an attorney. The high court also threw out a police officer’s testimony about cellphone technology, saying the testimony required an expert.

The Hattiesburg American reports (https://hatne.ws/275iulf ) that Collins’ retrial is scheduled to begin Tuesday in 12th District Circuit Court.

Jenkins was a member of the USM women’s basketball team for two seasons in the early 2000s.
