ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a confrontation preceded the fatal shooting of a man in Roswell and a suspect is in custody.

Roswell police arrested 31-year-old William Anthony Otero around 2 a.m. Monday in connection with the case.

They say Otero was detained almost immediately after Sunday night’s shooting.

Police say officers found 34-year-old Ralph Pichardo dead on a street about 8 p.m.

Investigators believe there was an argument and a possible fight between Otero and Pichardo before shots were fired.

Police say Otero is being held without bond in the Chaves County Detention Center.

It’s unclear if he has a lawyer yet.

Police say they’re still searching for a person of interest in the case, but don’t believe that person fired any shots during the incident.
