NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office says it won’t be extending plea offers to the couple accused of abusing and neglecting a young boy hospitalized in May 2015 with brain swelling and other severe injuries.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/2fVQFXJ) Assistant district attorney Michael Trummel told Criminal District Judge Byron C. Williams Tuesday the state intends to go to trial.

Thirty-nine-year-old Heather Simpson and 35-year-old Cristian DeGregory have pleaded not guilty to second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

The boy, now 7, was only 5 when he was rushed to Children’s Hospital on May 25, 2015. Authorities said the child survived after two emergency cranial surgeries, but has lasting neurological damage.
