PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Republican state lawmaker in Rhode Island says Providence’s Democratic mayor should be arrested if he ignores an immigration enforcement mandate set forth by President-elect Donald Trump.

North Kingstown state Rep. Doreen Costa wrote an essay published Wednesday by WPRO-AM (https://bit.ly/2fWCoZu) criticizing people who are upset by Trump’s win.

Costa says Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza could be breaking the law if he maintains a city policy that aims to protect residents in the country illegally from deportation for civil violations. Costa wrote that if Elorza “refuses to honor the federal or state law, I believe he should be arrested.”

Elorza didn’t immediately return requests seeking comment.

Costa is vice chairwoman of the House Judiciary Committee but didn’t seek re-election. She was a Trump delegate at the Republican National Convention.
