SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Latest on a strike of University of California workers (all times local):

11:25 a.m.

Electricians, elevator mechanics, plumbers and other workers have walked off the job at UCLA to demand higher wages on day one of two planned strikes this week at a pair of University of California campuses.

A 24-hour strike is taking place Wednesday at UCLA and a similar walkout is planned Thursday at UC San Diego.

Several hundred union members are expected at a Wednesday afternoon rally at UCLA.

The strikes are organized by Teamsters Local 2010, a union that represents skilled-trades workers at both schools.

The union says contracts for the workers at both schools have already expired and they are striking over the universities’ refusal to negotiate over back wages.

UCLA said in a statement that it was disappointed by the decision to strike.
