WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say police shot and killed a man who charged at them with a machete in the Los Angeles County city of Whittier.

Lt. Steve Jauch says authorities received a call around 6 a.m. Wednesday reporting a man with a machete in a residential area just blocks from police headquarters.

Jauch says the man threatened officers and at one point picked up a stick from the ground and hurled it, striking one of them.

He says officers opened fire when the man ran at them while wielding the machete. The man, who was in his 30s, was struck multiple times by gunfire and died at a hospital. His name was not released.

Investigators have closed streets as they investigate and try to track down witnesses.
