ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - Visitors to the Detroit Zoo can make like penguins and glide along a winter rink at the popular venue in Royal Oak.

Zoo officials say the 1,500-square-foot rink can accommodate 31 skaters and will be open through February 2017 outside the front facade of the Polk Penguin Conservation Center.

The rink is made of a synthetic plastic. The material is composed of heat-pressed layers of polymers and no water or electricity is required for operation.

Skating is allowed with regular zoo admission. Ages 4 and older can skate daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Skaters younger than 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Sessions of 25 minutes cost $7 with skate rental and $3 for visitors who bring their own skates.
