PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a large debris fire at a metal recycling plant in Phoenix is under control.

Phoenix Fire Department officials say the first-alarm blaze broke out about 1:30 p.m. Thursday at a plant near 35th Avenue and Broadway Road.

Fire department spokesman Capt. Rob McDade says crews were able to set up ladder trucks on two sides of the fire.

The ladder trucks were pumped by engines and were able to provide large amounts of water streams.

Operators of scrapyard cranes moved large pieces of metal to enable crews to reach the core of the fire.

McDade says one of the cranes struck a ladder truck. The ladder crew was uninjured, but had to retreat and come down from the ladder.

There’s still no word on how the fire started.
