PHOENIX (AP) - The assistant director of Arizona’s Department of Economic Security says her boss bought employees alcohol during the workday after they agreed to give up their job protections.

The Arizona Republic reports (https://bit.ly/2fl5kuf ) that DES Director Tim Jeffries acknowledged Wednesday that he bought alcohol, soft drinks and food for the DES Nogales staff as a reward after he converted workers there to at-will employment. He says the drinking occurred after the workday had ended and says he doesn’t remember when he left the restaurant to return to Phoenix.

Assistant DES Director Leah Landrum Taylor says she didn’t have anything to drink because they were all at work. The state employee handbook says employees may not be impaired by alcohol or drugs while one duty.
