AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A former Augusta jail inmate is suing the jail, its health care providers, the sheriff, and others saying she was sexually and physically assaulted by a nurse and multiple staff members.

The Kennebec Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2fzJ3fh ) an attorney for the inmate filed the lawsuit last week in federal court against the Kennebec County Correctional Facility.

The Associated Press typically doesn’t identify people who say they are sexual assault victims.

The lawsuit states the inmate received four injections and a suppository against her will, and has suffered physical pain, long-term anxiety and other problems.

County officials referred questions to attorney Peter Marchesi.

Marchesi says the county and its employees did nothing wrong, though a worker for the medical provider may have violated provisions of the criminal code and the inmate’s rights.
