HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced former Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Watson to three years in prison for beating a motorist in August 2012.

Justin Adam Watson pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in the arrest and assault of handyman Robert Bryant. Evidence showed Watson and Bryant scuffled in a bar in July 2012 after Watson thought he heard Bryant say something about his fiance. Federal prosecutor Christopher Perras has said that Watson then spent weeks searching for Bryant in an apparent quest for revenge.

Both Watson and Bryant are white.

WHNT-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2gnug9s ) many of Watson’s family and friends attended Thursday’s sentencing and expressed sadness when the sentence was announced.

Watson is scheduled to report to prison Jan. 5.
