LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Five years after taking control of the Lafayette Housing Authority, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has returned the agency to locals.

HUD took over LHA’s administrative operations in March 2011 following months of turmoil. The former director, Walter Guillory, resigned after an audit revealed numerous irregularities and discrepancies. Guillory eventually served 18 months in federal prison for bribery and bid law violations.

On Wednesday, multiple news outlets reported that HUD said the agency is ready to stand on its own.
