NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Port Authority hopes to create hundreds of thousands of jobs around the state in the next half century.

The Daily Press reports (https://bit.ly/2fWjphx) that the authority’s board of directors is charting an ambitious course for the future. The port recently began construction of new facilities to expand its capacity to be completed in 2019. The port also is working with local economic development agencies to market the region.

Port officials say it has some of the deepest waters along the East Coast to accommodate large ships. Plus, it has access to rail hubs in Ohio, Memphis and Chicago. Companies are also building more warehouse space in the region.

As recently as two years ago, the authority was losing money. But it’s now breaking even.
