AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas capital has named assistant Austin police chief Brian Manley as interim replacement for Police Chief Art Acevedo, who is leaving to head Houston’s police force.

Interim Austin City Manager Elaine Hart announced Manely’s appointment Friday. Manley will take on his new role Dec. 1, pending City Council approval.

Austin announced Thursday that Acevedo was heading to Houston to head that city’s police force.

Manley appeared at a news conference Friday with Acevedo and said that though “Acevedo is leaving, his vision remains.”

Manley said he planned to continue Acevedo’s community outreach efforts on social media and through work with local activists.

Manely began his Austin Police Department career as a patrol officer in 1991. He was promoted to the force’s No. 2 post last year.
