NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Dillard University police officer fired his gun at a fleeing vehicle, which he says tried to run him over.

Dillard University said in a statement that the incident began Thursday morning after the officer responded to a report about a group of people that assaulted a student on campus.

When the officer arrived at the scene, he spotted the suspects in a vehicle and attempted to stop them. The suspects refused the officer’s commands and accelerated toward him.

The officer then fired a single shot at the vehicle and dodged the car. The shot didn’t hit anyone and the vehicle escaped in an unknown direction.

Officials say the victim of the assault was taken to the hospital.

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating the incident.
