NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans gang leader recently sentenced to life in federal prison for crimes including three murders might get assigned to a prison relatively close to home.

A federal judge has recommended that 40-year-old Telly Hankton be imprisoned at one of two federal penitentiaries: the one in Pollock, in central Louisiana, or the one in Beaumont, Texas, roughly 25 miles past the Louisiana state line.

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman issued the order Thursday, granting a motion by lawyers for Hankton.

Hankton once was considered one of New Orleans’ most dangerous criminals. He was already serving a life sentence on a state conviction of murder when a federal jury convicted him of multiple crimes, including three slayings.
