SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A federal judge wants Airbnb and San Francisco to work harder to try to resolve a lawsuit over a new law that would fine Airbnb for booking rentals that were not registered with the city.

U.S. District Court Judge James Donato told the two sides Thursday to negotiate a way to enforce the law, saying he believed the problem was solvable.

Airbnb argued the ordinance would force it to screen and remove listings, and that role would violate a 1996 federal law.

Donato rejected that argument in a ruling last week, but said Airbnb might still be able to block the law on the grounds that the city does not have a way for it to quickly determine whether a unit is registered.
