PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl five years ago.

The Berkshire Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/2goQyaQ ) 32-year-old Stephen Hyland recently pleaded not guilty in Berkshire Superior Court to charges that include rape of a child with force.

Authorities say Hyland assaulted the child in the summer of 2011 when the two were walking near a reservoir in the town of Otis. They say the girl told a family member in August.

Investigators say there have been three prior complaints against the Otis man alleging he had sexual contact with young girls. Police say the cases didn’t move forward because the victims and their families chose not to prosecute.

This story has been corrected to show the defendant’s last name is Hyland, not Bannon.
