WASHINGTON (AP) - An exhibit of works by contemporary video artist Bill Viola is opening at the National Portrait Gallery.

Friday is opening day for “Bill Viola: The Moving Portrait.” The exhibit runs through May 7. It’s the first in the history of the National Portrait Gallery that’s entirely devoted to media art.

The show follows a big retrospective of Viola’s work in Paris. The New York-based Viola is known for using slow motion to encourage viewers to linger and think about the themes presented in his videos.
