ORLEANS, Mass. (AP) - Two New York parents have been ordered to serve a year of pretrial probation after police say they left their young children alone on a Cape Cod beach for an hour.

The Cape Cod Times reports (https://bit.ly/2fo2X9Y ) court documents indicate 45-year-old Charles Smith and 31-year-old Lindsay Pembleton, both of Niagara Falls, New York, were placed on probation on Wednesday on a charge of reckless endangerment of a child.

Police say two boys, ages 7 and 9, were alone at the Head of the Meadow Beach in North Truro, Massachusetts in August 2015.

The younger boy was Pembleton’s son and the older boy was Smith’s. The two were dating.

Police say the boys wanted to stay at the beach rather than accompany their parents to a campground.
