CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Police say a SWAT standoff in Charlotte has ended after suspects in a firearms theft surrendered peacefully.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department spokeswoman Cindy Wallace said in a news release Friday night that the standoff started after officers found a vehicle wanted in connection with a recent break-in and weapons theft at a Bass Pro Shops store.

She says officers tried to make contact with two suspects at the vehicle but they went into a motel and would not respond. Nearby rooms were evacuated as a precaution.

The release says the SWAT team arrived and set up a perimeter. After speaking with negotiators, the suspects were arrested without incident. The entire incident lasted a little more than an hour.

The suspects were being interviewed at police headquarters. Wallace says their names will be released when they are formally charged.
