RALEIGH,N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Republicans are hoping the still-unsettled race for attorney general could yet end up with a win for the GOP.

Republican candidate Buck Newton’s spokesman Michael Luethy said Friday the contest remains close and his campaign will analyze the results once all votes are counted. Newton trails Democrat Josh Stein by more than 21,000 votes, a margin too large to entitle the Republican to request a recount.

A Stein campaign spokesman didn’t return a message seeking comment Friday.

The Republican trailing in the contest for state auditor says he’ll demand a recount if the margin remains razor-thin. Chuck Stuber says he’ll seek a recount of his race with two-term incumbent Beth Wood to ensure the final results are right.

Stuber trails the Democrat by about 3,400 votes.
