Firefighters pulled the boy and his mother, 40-year-old Karin Ziolkowski, from the home on Monday morning. They were brought to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation but the boy later died. Karin Ziolkowski was in critical condition. The newspaper reports that she has improved.

The city’s fire marshal determined the blaze was intentionally set. Authorities are investigating.
