MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut officials are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the death of an 8-year-old boy killed in a house fire this week.

The Record-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2fmMqmM ) that the Office of the Child Advocate will conduct the review after the death of Elijah Ziolkowski in Meriden.

Firefighters pulled the boy and his mother, 40-year-old Karin Ziolkowski, from the home on Monday morning. They were brought to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation but the boy later died. Karin Ziolkowski was in critical condition. The newspaper reports that she has improved.

The city’s fire marshal determined the blaze was intentionally set. Authorities are investigating.

A representative from the state medical examiner’s office said Thursday the boy’s cause of death remains inconclusive.


This story has been corrected to remove an incorrect reference to the state child Fatality Review Panel requesting a review of the death.
